Keys to Success: 4 Traits of a Successful Businessman

Businessmen come in all shapes and sizes. Yet they seem to share some personality traits. Read more about this here.

What determines whether someone will be a successful businessman or not? There are as many answers to this question as there are people. Yet, it seems that some of the greatest businessmen and –women share some personality traits. This does not mean that having one or all of these traits will guarantee success, but they could prove helpful. When one looks at all the sites, e-books and other media (such as biographies of successful people) that claims to provide ‘tips for success’, certain things keep reappearing consistently.

  • Flexibility

World economy and the free market are fickle things. If  you want to be able to cope with this, flexibility is necessary. Conditions will change, that much is for sure. The question is, can you change too? Is your business plan or idea capable to adapt to whatever unforeseen circumstances that will arise? Important to note here is that this does not mean that long term planning is impossible. Quite the contrary. It simply means that there are more ways than one to reach a goal. A successful businessman or -woman is able to set a long term goal and reach it, because he or she is able to devise different paths to that goal. Don’t be rigid in your thinking. Use the changing economical environment to your advantage.

  • Insight

To know what the people want, you need to be able to understand their motivations. Why do they want certain things? Find out what is hot and what is not. Successful businessmen and –women seem to be able to anticipate the public’s desires. Understanding human nature is an important aspect of business, and incorporating this knowledge in marketing campaigns is a fundamental part of selling whatever it is you wish to sell. Take the time to get acquainted with human psychology. Find out which things stimulate us subconsciously. Know how to talk to people.

  • Cooperation

Two businesses can do more than one. This sounds very logical, yet there is an important caveat. Both businesses have to be able to profit from the arrangement. Not just the ability to cooperate is significant. The capacity to judge whether or not cooperation is advisable, is equally (or maybe even more) important. A businessman or –woman should be able to discern valuable collaboration opportunities. All participating businesses should have the potential to grow and profit from the joint efforts. Cooperation based on a selfish motive is the best form of collaboration in business. Learn to discern opportune possibilities for your business and to provide a motive for others to work with you.

  • Image

Make a good first impression. A successful businessman or –woman looks professional and trustworthy. You should be able to convince people not just by your arguments and sales techniques, but also by your attitude and image. Be open and friendly. This way people will be more inclined to listen to you. Convince them that they can benefit from your business. It is important to realize that you are the primary ambassador of your business. So, the better you appear, the better your business appears. Just by looking at you, people should get the idea that you know what you are talking about. Carry yourself with confidence and those around you will be more confident in whatever your business provides.

These four traits do not guarantee you success, since the success of your business depends on more aspects, some which are beyond your control. However, if you devote yourself to developing these traits, you will build a sound base to become successful in business. So, in conclusion, be flexible, insightful, cooperative and presentable and the road to success will become easier to walk on.
